Postdoctoral Scientist Position Available in Microbial Pathogenesis |   | Employer: Center for Microbial Pathogenesis (CMP): Mason Laboratory |   | Abigail Wexner Research Institute Nationwide Children’s Hospital |   | The Ohio State University |   | Location: Columbus, OH, USA |   | Position Type: Full-time |   | Discipline: host-pathogen interactions, metabolic influence in pathogenesis, bacterial adaptation and evolution |   | Position: We are seeking an enthusiastic hard-working postdoctoral fellow to join our research group. The fellow will perform research experiments designed to understand the pathogenesis of the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae that causes diseases of the upper and lower airways. Areas of work will include bacteria-host interactions that contribute to disease severity, biofilm studies, and the study of molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis. Such experiments will involve the use of laboratory animals and all work will involve maintenance of records of experiments, data analysis and preparation of publications. The applicant must have a  PhD degree, preferably in Microbiology or related field of study. For more information, please reach out to Dr. Mason at Kevin.Mason@nationwidechildrens.org. We will assess applications upon receipt and keep the position open until it is filled. |   | Qualifications: | - Applicants must have an Ph.D., or MD/PhD | - Strong background in microbiology and immunology and experience in cellular and molecular microbial pathogenesis techniques, including cell culture, bacterial genetics and other relevant techniques. | - Prior knowledge and practical experience in animal models of inflammation and infection preferred | - Candidates should be capable of designing and carrying out high-level, complex research experiments independently. | - Applicants with a good track record of publication are desirable, along with effective verbal communication and scientific writing skills. | Research Description:  The Mason laboratory studies pathogenic mechanisms that equip survival of nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) during transition from a commensal microorganism of the nasopharynx to a pathogen of the upper and lower airways. Of critical importance is the ability of NTHI to adapt to host microenvironments, specifically the limitation of nutrients and host immune pressures. The lab has identified mechanisms of innate immune resistance and nutrient uptake that are essential for NTHI pathogenesis. The lab's work is focused on three main areas of investigation: 1) how host nutritional immunity influences NTHI biofilm architecture via morphological changes in bacteria, invasion of host epithelial cells resulting in formation of intracellular bacterial communities and modulation of inflammatory responses that contributes to persistence and disease severity; 2) Sap-transporter mediated uptake of nutrients and host derived antimicrobial peptides as a mechanism of survival; 3) biochemical analysis of Sap transporter assembly and function in response to host nutritional and innate immune pressures. Elucidation of mechanisms of pathogenesis will allow the lab to develop and apply novel strategies to target NTHI virulence mechanisms. In addition to being an excellent research environment, NCH offers multiple career development opportunities. The Mason lab trainees are encouraged to pursue these opportunities, write grants, and develop their own projects toward independent careers. To apply, please submit curriculum vitae, a cover letter indicating areas of expertise and a detailed statement of research interests, including scientific accomplishments, and a list of 3 references. |   | Environment. Our team is part of the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis (CMP) at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which exists to answer questions that will improve the early diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of society’s most important diseases by combining high-quality, fact-based lab discoveries and innovative patient-based research. The Research Institute is ranked among the top 10 for NIH funding among free-standing children’s hospitals. The CMP participates in the Infectious Disease Consortium which includes all research scientists and clinicians at Nationwide Children’s Hospital with an interest in infectious disease. The consortium hosts regular meetings to discuss research progress and ideas and hosts an annual retreat. In addition, Dr. Mason is a member of the Host Defense and Microbial Biology and Microbial Communities interdisciplinary research teams within the Infectious Diseases Institute, which is hosted on the main Ohio State University campus less than 5 miles from Nationwide Children’s Hospital. This multidisciplinary research center brings together faculty that focus on a wide range of different aspects of infectious disease research. The breadth of expertise of these faculty provides an invaluable resource. The center hosts a high caliber external speaker seminar series, an annual retreat and additional resources to support infectious disease research. As a result of the high concentration of researchers studying host-pathogen interactions the Research Institute is a very strong and supportive environment in which to conduct such research. |   | A few facts about Columbus, Ohio: | - The capital city of Ohio | - 14th largest city in the United States; 2.1M people in the greater metro area | - One of the fastest growing cities in the US and the fastest growing city in the Midwest | - Numerous top-ranked schools and public-school districts | - Affordable: The cost of living in Columbus is 40% lower than in Boston, 55% lower than in San Francisco, and 65% lower than in New York City | - Diverse economy: | - Columbus is one of the 10 rising cities for startups, according to Forbes, and one of the 20 best cities in the U.S. for startups, according to Commercial Cafe. | - Headquarters of 5 Fortune 500 companies | - Smart Asset calls Columbus the #1 American city to work in tech | - $1 billion city and state government investment in the Columbus Innovation District | | Culture (https://matadornetwork.com/read/columbus-ohio-cultural-center/) and outstanding food scene | Home to: | - The top-rated science museum in the US, COSI (2020 and 2021) – USA Today | - Columbus Zoo is consistently rated as one of the top 5 in the nation | - Big-time sports: Ohio State Buckeyes football and basketball are consistently ranked near the top of the NCAA standings; NHL hockey, Columbus Blue Jackets; MLS Soccer, Columbus Crew | - 19 Metro Parks encompassing 230 miles of trails and over 28,400 acres of land https://www.metroparks.net/

Research Associate - Research Microbial Pathogen Staff  |   | Our team is part of the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis (CMP) at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which exists to answer questions that will improve the early diagnosis, treatment and outcomes of society’s most important pediatric diseases by combining high-quality, fact-based lab discoveries and innovative patient-based research. Our passion and vision are to rapidly translate research discoveries into effective treatments and prevention strategies for pediatric and adult patients afflicted with chronic and recurrent infectious disease. The Bakaletz Lab utilizes multidisciplinary and innovative approaches to advance our understanding as to how bacterial biofilms contribute to pathogenesis, chronicity and recurrence of disease. To date, our focus has primarily been on polymicrobial diseases of the human respiratory tract, however we are rapidly expanding our areas of interest to diseases problematic at other anatomical sites via collaboration with multiple colleagues. Dr. Bakaletz’ team’s focus is on using acquired advanced understanding to design and test novel therapeutic approaches as well as prevention strategies in vitro, the ultimately in vivo via use of several well-established models of human disease. Specifically, the Bakaletz laboratory is interested in the interface between the bacterial biofilm and the host’s innate immune system to better empower the host to be able to eradicate biofilms or prevent them from forming. Advances in the laboratory are rapidly translated via interaction with pharmaceutical companies and/or via recently founded start-up companies. The long-term goal of our research program is to gain an increased understanding of the role of recalcitrant bacterial biofilms in the pathogenesis of chronic and recurrent diseases the use this understanding to design and test novel therapeutic approaches and vaccine development. Ultimately, the passion and vision of the Bakaletz laboratory is to rapidly translate research discoveries into lasting treatment options for pediatric and adult patients afflicted with bacterial diseases wherein biofilms present significant challenges to treatment or resolution. To achieve these goals, we actively engage in translating our findings from the bench to the clinic whenever possible.
