Overview
A Research Assistant position is available in the clinical and translational research laboratory of Dr. Rajan Thakkar. Dr. Thakkar is a pediatric surgeon whose lab investigates immune function following burn injury in human pediatric patients and mice. The lab has an interest in the use of immunotherapy to modify the immune system following burn injury to improve adverse outcomes such as infection.  As part of a newly funded 5-year grant (starting September 2023), a research assistant is needed to perform research experiments (flow cytometry, cell culture assays, RNA extraction, immunohistochemistry, ELISA) in accordance with provisions of approved protocols; maintains records of experiments and prepares laboratory reports; assists in analyzing data and preparing publications. The lab will be moving into a new lab space in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute Building 2 in June 2024.

The person in this position will conduct research activities under the supervision of the principal investigator, Dr. Ginger Yang and in collaboration with Dr. Yang’s team members. The Center for Injury Research and Policy is one of 9 CDC-funded Injury Control Research Centers and focuses on the prevention of injury among children and adolescents. Its faculty members are active in injury research and prevention on local to global levels. Center faculty members teach and mentor students at The Ohio State University and from across the nation. Its global injury research program includes ongoing projects with its affiliate faculty in low- and middle-income countries and a visiting scholars program. Through multiple partnerships, the Center has established collaborative networks of injury professionals regionally, nationally and globally.

This position is initially going to be a hybrid of bench science and lab administration. The position will be approximately 50% lab based and performing experiments in general support of the lab research goals, likely assisting multiple members of the lab. The position will also be responsible for directing the day-to-day management of the Stottmann Lab. They are responsible for assisting the PI and Stottmann lab members in the implementation and performance of translational research. They are responsible for resource and protocol management of the research unit. This position will interact closely with the PI and assist in regulatory compliance of clinical and laboratory studies. This position works with investigators and lab staff to implement and maintain best research practices, manage funding, foster efficient and productive relationships with other groups, and interface with multiple NCH/RI departments/cores to coordinate efficient research efforts. As the candidate grows into the role and becomes fully integrated into the lab, the balance of duties may shift towards more full time experimentation or administration, pending fit of the candidate.

We are seeking a postdoctoral scholar for a position to join Dr. Sriram Vaidyanathan’s lab at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Ohio State University. Our lab is in the Center for Gene Therapy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH). The NCH Center for Gene Therapy has a long track record of training leaders in gene therapy, has been the site of the development of the first FDA-approved AAV-mediated gene therapy for neuromuscular disease (SMA). Our lab is focused on the development of genetic therapies for cystic fibrosis. |   | The development of CRISPR/Cas9 over the past decade has enabled the development of precise genetic therapies for diseases such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia. The Vaidyanathan laboratory is investigating the use of CRISPR/Cas9 based genome editing to treat CF and other diseases affecting the lungs. This position presents the opportunity to further develop new CRISPR/Cas9 based gene editing methods, development of airway stem cell therapies, and study airway stem cell biology. |   | With guidance from Dr. Vaidyanathan, you will be responsible for leading an independent project that addresses our shared interests and aligns with your career goals.
