EMPLOYER:  Gene Therapy LaboratoryAbigail Wexner Research Institute, Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH). |   | LOCATION:  Columbus, Ohio, USA |   | POSITION TYPE:  Full-time |   | PREFERRED START DATE: April 2024 |   | DISCIPLINE: Gene Therapy |   | ORGANIZATION TYPE:  Non-profit |   | RESEARCH DESCRIPTION: Our group is focused on developing novel gene therapy treatments for neuromuscular disorders and lysosomal storage disorders.  We have recently developed and tested a novel gene therapy in patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and are currently developing treatments for Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy Type R9, GNE myopathy, and Lysosomal Acid Lipase Deficiency.  This research involves basic and proof of concept studies in animal models for these diseases, as well as safety studies, with the goal of developing IND approvals for the testing of therapies in clinical trials.  We collaborate with a team of other laboratories in Center for Gene Therapy and at Ohio State University to accomplish these goals.   |   | The successful candidate will have an excellent foundation in molecular and cellular biology and also in molecular and cellular pathology. We are particularly interested in candidates who also have experience analyzing animal models of disease and who understand the concepts relevant to design of disease therapies for muscle, liver, and/or brain disorders.  As our lab focuses on diseases and therapies involving glycosylation, experience in glycobiology would be a major plus. The Hospice, Palliative Care, and Homecare Social Worker functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team for Hospice, Palliative Care, and Homecare. The Social Worker provides clinical social work services to patients and their families enrolled in Hospice, Home-Based Palliative Care program and to select patients and their families receiving services from Homecare. Overview
The Biopathology Center (BPC) within The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is a primarily grant-funded biorepository with the objective of acquisition and long-term storage of a large number of cancerous, normal and diseased biospecimens and related data. These biospecimens are used to support and facilitate cutting edge research and advancing clinical patient care. In accordance with provisions of approved protocols, the BPC currently serves as biorepositories for the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), NRG Oncology, SWOG (formerly the Southwestern Oncology Group), the Pediatric Division of the Collaborative Human Tissue Network (pCHTN), internal investigators, and other sponsor groups. This is a fast-paced, team-oriented laboratory that requires the ability to work well under pressure and maintain constant attention to detail. The position requires frequent communication via phone and email with submitting institutions as well as internal coordinating laboratories. This role does not perform hypothesis-based research or analysis on the biospecimens – we serve a supporting role to facilitate research. The Lab Support Associate is responsible for providing clerical and general support to the Biospecimen Processing and Receiving Laboratory. Duties include, but are not limited to, transportation of specimens, providing effective communication with regards to specimens and collection information, and providing an appropriate link to other lab sections when needed. Should project a professional image through direct and indirect communication to both internal and external Nationwide Children’s Hospital customers.
