Overview

The IGM Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for supervising overall operations of the assigned IGM laboratory section working with the other supervisors, managers, and directors to maintain technical and procedural operations within the Institute for Genomic Medicine. This includes direction of workforce, problem investigation and resolution, developing and implementing procedures/processes, assuring quality and regulatory compliance, assignment/delegation of duties, eduction/competency and training, and communication with a variety of different customers. The laboratory supervisor will remain proficient/competent on testing benches, performance of routine and complex laboratory analyses, and quality control. The IGM Laboratory Supervisor may also be involved in researching, developing and implementing new or improved procedures, creating or reviewing quality control and quality improvement documentation, and regulatory/compliance assignments.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Demonstrates strong leadership and management within department

• Leads by example with personal standards and consistent treatment of all ethical issues

• Facilitates workgroups and serves as a leader for projects within the department

• Demonstrates ability to select, train, and motivate staff and to develop and communicate clear goals for operation

• Promotes a cohesive work environment and identifies resolutions to improve morale by serving as the departmental culture coach, safety coach, or other leadership position

• Demonstrates ability to change manner of communication style to adapt to various cultural differences as needed

• Oversees daily operations of a section and works with other supervisors to adjust schedules/assignments of staff to meet workflow demands

• Prioritizes and adjusts work schedules; Provides input during scheduling meetings regarding workforce needs

• Maintains equitable and appropriate workflow and responsibilities

• Maintains awareness of staff development issues, providing timely and specific feedback

• Responsible for performance appraisals, evaluating merit increases using appropriate tools and disciplinary actions when appropriate Demonstrates the technical and computer skills required for management of staff who perform molecular/cytogenetic analysis

• Performs routine and complex laboratory technical procedures and functions in the laboratory information systems in an adequate and timely manner

• Demonstrates proficiency and expertise in laboratory protocols including use of research databases, LIS, LIMS, CoPath, Lab Vantage and/or other related software

• Oversees instrument maintenance program, supports regular preventative maintenance, and maintains records of service

• Reviews completed cases and summarizes the results for clinical reports and/or research studies

• Performs secondary technical review of cases prior to sign-out

• Prepares written results of research and development activities and oral reports when appropriate; utilizes chart, graphs, tables as needed

• Covers oncall responsibilities as necessary including STAT testing and storage temperature monitoring such as Krabbe oncall and MESA oncall.

• Serves as a technical and procedural resource to medical, nursing, and support staff

• Leads specimen problem investigation and resolution for customer/patient, including incident reporting and resolution

• Maintains ASCP certification

• Performs other related duties as assigned Demonstrates knowledge of and upholds applicable laws and regulation related to the position and maintains a safe environment • Maintains and enforces all guidelines including OSHA, Joint Commission, BAP and CAP within the department

• Follows established guidelines for access, use and disclosure of patient information

• Performs preventive maintenance and quality control with appropriate documentation and communication

• Oversees quality assurance protocols within designated areas

• Organizes the selection of CAP survey and other proficiency testing materials and reviews performance

• Assists Managers/Clinical Directors with the preparation for inspections, including self-inspections and by serving as a liaison with the College of American Pathologist (CAP)

• Develops, writes, reviews and updates applicable SOPs, documents, forms, etc as directed Participates in appropriate training and coaching for the IGM laboratories

• Completes all assigned training and competency assessments on or prior to deadlines

• Responsible for overseeing training for new employees during orientation period, new procedures/updates and maintaining appropriate documentation

• Assists with procedure and technical development and acts as a resource

• Demonstrates the ability to communicate respectfully with coworkers, staff, patients, parents and clients

• Maintains awareness of current literature and product development in relevant areas

• Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain ASCP certifications including at least twelve hours of approved continuing education yearly

• Attends meetings of relevance to cytogenetics, molecular genetics, and/or molecular biology on behalf of the Institute for Genomic Medicine and reports/presents material learned

• Shares information from professional meetings or current literature as requested by the departmental leadership team

• Assists in process development/improvement within the department including presenting continuing education opportunities

• Serves as General Supervisor as defined by CAP/CLIA guidelines

• Performs other duties as assigned by the Clinical Director(s) or Manager(s) Demonstrates the ability to make determinations regarding course of action and alternatives by addressing problems, using resolutions and basic troubleshooting skills as applicable to assigned work

• Uses information from quality control checks to predict and avoid problems

• Demonstrates the ability to adjust to change, handle interruptions and function with changing circumstances

• Maintains knowledge of status of cases within a specific laboratory area and prioritizes analysis of specimens

• Demonstrates ability to perform in-depth troubleshooting/problem solving when laboratory procedures or equipment fail

• Able to resolve technical, computer, and customer service problems

• Confers on a regular basis with other supervisors, Managers, and Clinical Directors to review status of research/clinical cases and recommends alternative strategies when appropriate

• Displays a positive attitude, limits criticism to constructive and provides sound solutions for problems as they arise

• Investigates and oversees problem solving activities regarding lab incidents or deviations from established procedures and processes Demonstrates the ability to plan and develop new procedures or policies and demonstrates initiative to complete assignments

• Assists in the selection of additional or replacement equipment and specialized supplies

• Participates in the continuing refinement of current, standard protocols and creates new protocols for implementation of molecular cytogenetic diagnostic tests for research purposes into routine, clinical laboratory

• Implements new procedures that contribute to efficiency, effectiveness and improving quality

• Assists Faculty in preparing and submitting proposals for external funding of developmental activities

• Designs experiments and evaluations to ensure use of appropriate controls and quality analysis

• Prepares conclusions and implications for future research and development of experiments for Clinical Directors

• Writes protocols, quality control procedures, etc in conjunction with Clinical Directors for implementation of new tests. Develops evaluates and/or implements new procedures, services and equipment for the department.

• Assists Supervisor and Manager with duties as assigned

• Assists in process development/improvement within the department including participating in quality assurance, continuing education programs, departmental meetings and special projects as assigned Provides courteous and informative internal and external customer service

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science; or a chemical, physical or biological science from an accredited institution and American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certified as an MT(ASCP), MB(ASCP) or CG(ASCP)
  • At minimum four years of experience as a Genetic Technologist II or equivalent work experience
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, and computer experience
  • Able to present information through oral or written communication effectively
  • Maintain and foster interpersonal relationships with internal and external customers
  • Demonstrates the ability to work efficiently and independently promoting a team environment and maintaining a cooperative and supportive atmosphere. When personal workload is light, helps others to stay productive
  • Demonstrate the ability to adjust to change, handle interruptions and function with changing circumstances

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand for more than 1 hour at a time, sit for more than 1 hour at a time.
  • Good visual and auditory acuity. Full use of hands and arms.
  • Ability to speak clearly.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally.
  • Must complete color blind testing.
