Overview

A Research Assistant is available in Dr. Patrick Gallagher’s laboratory in the Center for Perinatal Research at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital/Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. The Gallagher lab conducts research on the genetics and genomics of blood formation and inherited blood disorders.

 

Performs research experiments and clinical studies in accordance with provisions of the approved protocol; maintains records of experiments and prepares laboratory reports; assists in analyzing data and preparing publications.

Responsibilities

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Operate lab equipment such as centrifuges, digital microscope for cell imaging, etc.
  • Collect data and maintains accurate logs
  • Analyze data and summarize for use in publications
  • PCR, cell culture, and molecular biology techniques
  • Assist with mouse colony handling and management (preferred not mandatory) 
  • Data collection and computer data entry 
  • Sterilization of equipment
  • Communicate routine research procedures and results to other technicians or study team
  • Maintain research equipment, reagents, supplies, general laboratory safety
  • Collection and storage of biological samples 
  • Readily learn and adapt new techniques 
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information
  • Prepare and process laboratory samples using established protocols

Qualifications

What Are We Looking For?

To fulfill this role successfully, you must possess these minimum qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 6 months of laboratory experience.
  • Coursework in Biology, Zoology, Chemistry, Genetics, or related fields are required.
  • Desire to pursue a career in clinical, translational, biomedical research, and/or healthcare related field and knowledge of the research process.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques 
  • Experience with mouse colony handling and management (preferred not mandatory) 
  • Experience with short, intermediated and longer-term project planning
  • Ability to do technical writing, and good communication skills. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information
  • Ability to prepare and process laboratory samples using established protocols 
  • Ability to work with different computer softwares and programs.

Minimum Physical Requirements:

  • Conducting laboratory based research studies 
  • Recording and analyzing data generated by research study 
  • Performing paperwork associated with research 
  • Interpreting results of data with PI Physical Requirements
  • Kneeling / reaching 
  • Finger dexterity 
  • Talking / hearing / seeing 
  • Lifting / carrying weight 0-20 pounds for 1-5 minutes
