The Cardiothoracic Surgery QIS Coordinator/Data Abstractor is responsible for the review and detailed abstraction of cardiac registries including STS (Society of Thoracic Surgeons) cardiac registries, CHSS (Congenital Heart Surgeons Society) cardiac registries, WSPCHS (World Society of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgeons) and AATS (American Association of Thoracic Surgeons) cardiac registries for clinical research, quality improvement, performance measurement, disease surveillance, and other secondary data uses. The QIS Coordinator/Data Abstractor is detail oriented, highly organized, committed to high quality data abstraction, meets research, quality and productivity standards, functions well independently, collaborates well with others and works well under time constraints to ensure deadlines are met.

Responsibilities

1. Develops interdisciplinary quality improvement activities to meet strategic plan and TJC standards.

2. Actively analyzes data and prepares reports for quality corporate goals. Collaborates with all disciplines to improve patient care through facilitation, tracking, trending, follow up and communication of indicator results ( Sedation, Restraints, Code Blue, ACTS, Pressure Ulcers, Incident Reports etc.).

3. Responsible for the opening/review and finalization of all CS STARS patient/visitor events.

4. Responsible for the trending and reporting of patient/visitor events.

5. Participates in an on-going evaluation of quality development strategies and recommends changes with respect to current professional trends and continuous improvement philosophies in services provided.

6. Has working knowledge, interprets and assists in TJC standard compliance as they apply to medical staff, hospital departments, committees and care processes. Participates in PPR process and Constant Readiness Program.

7. Communicates quality outcome data and patient satisfaction data to the staff and Quality Improvement Program Committee; collaborates with staff in identifying resources and educational needs to achieve performance goals.

8. Collaborates with Patient Care Services, Education, Pharmacy, Epidemiology. Legal Services, Chief Medical Officer and HIMS departments to ensure coordination of programming activities and policy revision compliance; communicates improvements in the quality of care through publications and/or professional presentations.

9. Facilitates PI initiatives with Patient Care Services Leadership. Analyzes data and prepares reports for Committees.

10. Maintains Nursing Scorecard and metrics.

11. Provides continuous quality improvement education as appropriate12. Maintains knowledge level and ability related to continuous quality improvement through publications, conferences, networking with other hospitals and through the website. 13. Maintains personal certification if applicable.14. Maintains data accuracy and integrity in databases.15. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Graduate of an approved School of Nursing or related field.

Masters in Nursing or related field preferred.

2. Two years experience in the quality management field preferred.

3. 3-4 years experience as a clinician in a hospital setting

4. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills necessary to present and communicate important information effectively to all levels of hospital staff.

5. Proficient in the use of a personal computer especially excel, word and access.

6. Demonstrates experience in presentation skills and the ability to analyze and interpret statistical data.
