Pharmacist - Ambulatory Pharmacy

 

The Outpatient Staff Pharmacist position is responsible for seeing that the prescription needs of patients are fulfilled. The position exists primarily to support the continuity of pharmaceutical care and customer service for patients of Nationwide Children's Hospital. Demonstrates competencies defined in Outpatient Staff Pharmacist responsibilities in providing age-appropriate care to patients from the age of birth through 21 years, and select adult patients.

Responsibilities

  • Dispenses medication and counsels caregivers on the medication. Manages dispensing information through the computer including the patient’s profile, reviews patient’s profile both inpatient and outpatient, before dispensing medication for possible medication complications and takes appropriate action to correct problems. Complies with OBRA-90 regulations (Continuously)
  • Prepares outpatient prescriptions: determines appropriateness of dosage form for the size and weight of the child; contacts physician if in doubt of appropriateness of dosage. May on occasion need to fill a prescription from a study and perform the required record keeping.(Continuously)
  • Obtains billing information: confirms the patient’s ability to pay or refers patient to appropriate agency; records filling and billing information according to established procedures. (Frequently)
  • Provides drug information to health professionals, patients, and parents; instructs patient/parents on correct use of self-administered medications. (Continuously)
  • Supervises the Outpatient Pharmacy Technicians and Interns, in the performance of prescription data entry, and preparation of prescriptions. Assigns tasks, checks work, (i.e. compounds) and provides input in performance evaluations. (Frequently)

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 

Education:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (preferred) or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college of pharmacy.

Licensure:

  • Licensure, or licensure-eligibility, to practice pharmacy in the state of Ohio

Certifications:

  • Immunization administration, basic life support required or must obtain within 6 months of hire.

Skills:

  • Basic skills in using and documenting in an electronic medical record.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required in providing education to patients/families and patient care team members; as well as in interactions with students, the public, pharmaceutical representatives, and representatives from external institutions (i.e., colleges of pharmacy, health care institutions).
  • Aptitude for detail and medication safety skills.

Experience:

  • Community Pharmacy/Retail Experience or internship preferred

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Talking on Telephone or in Person Constantly
  • Typing on the Computer Keyboard Constantly
  • Standing or Walking Constantly
  • Sitting Occasionally (0-10%)
