We are seeking an experienced Senior Bioinformatics Scientist to spear-head cutting edge genomic research into rare genetic disorders and congential heart disease. This role involves applying machine learning to genomic data, statistical genetics, and the development and deployment of novel bioinformatic tools.The ideal candidate will contribute to  analyzing large patient cohorts with genome sequencing data, pushing the boundaries of pediatric healthcare research.

Responsibilities

 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Research and Development: Lead the innovation of computational and statistical methods for generating, analyzing, and interpreting genomic data. Design and implement sophisticated bioinformatics algorithms and software tailored to advancing our understanding of genetic diseases.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Act as a pivotal liaison between our data sciences research laboratory and our translational research collaborations, providing expertise in bioinformatics to translate complex genomic data into actionable insights. Drive projects from conception to completion, ensuring alignment with the Office of Data Sciences and White Lab strategic goals.
  • Data Analysis and Pipeline Development: Utilize advanced computational genomics skills to:
    • Apply and adapt existing bioinformatics tools for NGS analysis, ensuring accurate downstream analysis and visualization.
    • Craft and maintain robust data analysis pipelines for diverse NGS protocols.
    • Innovate and benchmark new algorithms, enhancing our analytical capabilities.
    • Oversee the deployment of bioinformatics solutions on cloud computing platforms, with a focus on efficiency and scalability. Knowledge of Docker, AWS, and Spark is a plus.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Exhibit exceptional communication skills to foster collaboration with scientists, clinicians, and developers. Contribute to scientific discussions, publications, and grant writing. Mentor junior bioinformatics staff and students, fostering a culture of learning and growth. Engage in community outreach to share findings and methods.

Qualifications

 

  • Educational Background: A Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, or a related field, complemented by at least two years of postdoctoral experience. Candidates with a Master’s degree and significant relevant experience (10+ years) will also be considered.
  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated expertise in NGS data analysis, strong command over UNIX/LINUX environments, and proficiency in scripting languages like Python. Familiarity with core bioinformatics tools, databases, and the R programming language is essential.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong mathematical aptitude, abstract reasoning abilities, and hands-on approach to converting complex theoretical ideas into executable code. Experience with statistical analysis methods and experimental design is required. Experience in statistical modeling, machine learning, and natural language processing is a plus.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment, with a keen eye for detail and problem-solving.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Strong interpersonal skills with a track record of productive collaborations across diverse teams. The ability to adapt communication styles to various audiences and cultural backgrounds is critical.
