The Scientific Writing Program Coordinator has the responsibility for creating and supporting a culture of scientific writers at Nationwide Children’s Hopsital (NCH). This position will have two primary functions; one, as the Program Coordinator for scientific writing professional development activites at NCH, and two, as a Scientific Writing Editor for faculty and trainees within the Abigail Wexner Research Institute (AWRI). This role provides direct support for manuscript and grant proposal development and will also be responsible for developing, coordinating, and facilitating a wide variety of writing intitatives, including scientific writing workshops and the establishment and coordination of scientific writing groups across campus. The Scientific Writing Program Coodinator works within the Office of Trainee Affairs and closely with the Center for Faculty Development with the overall goal of increasing the quality of scholarly productivity and funding success for both faculty and trainees.

  • Training/Resource Development/Coordination
  • Develop, implement, and coordinate hands-on scientific writing programs and workshops to meet the needs of faculty and trainees. These should be specifically focused to provide training in at least three distinct categories:
    • Non-federal funding (foundation, intramural, small business, etc.)
    • Federal training awards (NIH F-, K-, DoD)
    • Federal independent awards (NIH R-, DoD)
  • Integrate external scientific writing resouces as appropriate into a comprehensive scientific writing and development program. Develop and submit annual budget request for resources.
  • Support the community of writers at NCH by coordinating scientific writing groups to longitudinally support the needs of faculty.
  • Initate and develop mock study sections for faculty and trainees.
  • Develops, coordinates, and maintains online resources around scientific writing. 
  • Provides scientific editing for the development and production of scientific abstracts, manuscripts, and grant proposals. Align scientific content with requirements, proof and edit copy for accuracy, appropriate organization, and correct formatting. Track daily operations and usage/outcomes of services – number of grants and manuscripts edited, funding and/or publication status. Provides detailed metrics to leadership on a quarterly basis.
  • Compile an annual satisfaction survey of customers who utilize grant/manuscript editing services and report outcomes annually. Develop annual action plans as necessary to increase customer satisfaction scores or close identified service gaps.
  • Effectively communicates scientific writing and training and funding opportunities to faculty.
  • Build an external network of resources and promote relevant scientific writing training/resources available to faculty and trainees.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • Masters in healthcare related field, or equivalent experience with strong scientific writing and editing skills and experience. PhD preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in professional scientific grant writing and submittal process.
  • Experience in developing and/or supporting a comprehensive scientific writing curriculum preferred. Minimum of 2 years facilitation experience required.
  • Previous experience in a biomedical, research and/or healthcare setting preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, planning skills, coordination and prioritization skills. Ability to distill important information from unnecessary information is a must.
  • Working knowledge of computer software. Ability to learn new computer software programs.
  • Outstanding customer service, communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a wide variety of personnel and customers.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team; ability to perform multiple task simultaneously and effectively.
  • Self-motivated person with excellent follow-through.
