Post Doctoral Scientist - Center of Biobehavioral Health (Taylor) 

 

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Early Development of At-Risk Infants and Young Children: The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, in affiliation with The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research fellow in the Center for Biobehavioral Health as of April 1, 2021.

 

We are seeking a doctoral level candidate with interests in research on the effects of brain injury or disease on infant development. Appropriate candidates would be persons with doctoral degrees in developmental psychology, pediatric neuropsychology, or a related behavioral health or developmental science profession. The fellow will work on existing data from an ongoing study of infant development and related studies of neurodevelopment in infants and youth with early brain-related conditions such as preterm birth.

 

Training and mentorship will be available in research methods, grantsmanship, and academic career development. The fellow will also collaborate with faculty from the Center for Biobehavioral Health, the Center for Injury Research and Policy, and the Center for Innovation in Pediatric Practice. Candidates for this position must have obtained their doctoral degree by the start date. The fellowship will be at least 2 years in duration. Responsibilities

  • With guidance from a CRI mentor, design experiments and develops protocols required to conduct productive research in a specific scientific area. 
  • After the study has been designed, performs the research work in accordance with the protocol.  
  • Helps to train and supervise technical support staff in performing specific techniques essential to carrying out the research program.  
  • Records and analyzes data generated by the research study, and helps to plan future research endeavors.  
  • Prepares scientific and technical papers from the results of the research work.  Publishes papers in appropriate refereed scientific journals.   Presents findings at local (particularly CRI research meetings) and national research forums.  
  • If appropriate, collaborates with other ongoing research efforts either at CRI or at The Ohio State University.  
  • This is considered a training position therefore the RI will allow a trainee 5 years to advance beyond the level of Post Doc.  
  • Works toward research independence. Prepares to submit proposals to and obtain funding from external granting agencies.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

 

Education

  • Ph.D

Experience: 

  • Necessary technical skills in the appropriate area of research.
  • Ability to do technical writing, and good communication skills.  

Percentage Time Spent: 

  • Designing and developing protocols 10%    
  • Performing research work 30%    
  • Recording and analyzing data generated by research study 25%    
  • Preparing scientific and technical papers 25%    
  • Liaison with OSU researchers 05%    
  • Miscellaneous paperwork associated with research 05%

Minimum Physical Requirements: 

  • Kneeling / reaching 100%  
  • Finger dexterity 100%  
  • Talking / hearing / seeing   33%  
  • Lifting / carrying weight 0-20 pounds for 1-5 minutes  

*Pressure in this position will vary depending on the workload.  The workload will be heavy but manageable most of the time.  Pressure may arise in the face of deadlines associated research and manuscript writing.
