  • Overview

    We are seeking a Coding Specialist Sr.

    Utilizing 3M encoding system, the Senior Coding Specialist is responsible for accurate assignment of I-10 and CPT codes to inpatient and outpatient medical records for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal regulations.  Coding Staff are required to meet coding quality and quantity standards.  Also Coding Staff are responsible for researching newly identified diagnoses and/or procedures for code assignments. They also perform all other duties  as assigned by Manager or Lead Coder.

    What Will You Be Doing?

    1. Utilizes the 3M encoder system to assign I-10 and CPT codes to inpatient medical records and calculate



    1. Codes inpatient, OBS/OPS, emergency room, and other outpatient records utilizing I-10 and CPT coding system.


    1. Codes all cycle bills for Patient Accounts so that an interim bill can be generated.


    1. Consistently codes 18 inpatient accounts, 35-40 OPS/OBS accts, 225 ED/UC accts or 300 diagnostic accounts


    per day.


    1. Consistently codes at 95% accuracy rate or better (minimum quality standard).


    1. Meet weekly coding deadlines to bill within NCH hospital suspense of 5 days.


    1. Works successfully in a team environment to achieve coding goals and deadlines.


    1. Utilizes Internet and other resources to research newly identified diagnoses and/or procedures.


    1. Assists physicians in research projects by identifying the necessary ranges of disease or procedure codes.


    1. Researches billing issues for Patient Accounts by analyzing edits and account denials.


    1. Exhibits excellent customer service skills in daily contact with internal and external customers.


    1. Identifies process problems in daily workflow and takes the initiative to solve them.


    1. Uses Streamline Health, Provation, Cardio IMS, and Epic to access documentation for code assignments.


    1. Reviews HIM workqueues for unbilled accts out of deadline and completes coding.


    1. Performs inpatient and outpatient coding audits at direction of Coding and Compliance Manager.


    1. Participates in Coding In-service programs and outside educational meetings.


    1. Completes required on-line coding education modules as assigned.


    1. Accesses CDI software to populate coding APRDRG and evaluate variances.


    1. Educate CDS Specialists on I-10CM coding.


    1. Communicate with CDS team using CDS Software, phone or in person regarding APRDRG mismatches.


    1. Query providers to confirm diagnoses, procedures or specificity.


    1. Performs other duties as assigned by the Coding and compliance Manager.


    Knowledge, skills and abilities required        

    1.  Health Information technology program graduate with successful completion of accreditation examination



    1. CPC, COC or CCS certification required if RHIT certification not completed.


    1. Minimum 2-3 years of acute care coding experience preferred.


    1. Working knowledge of ICD-10CM and I-10 PCS coding, CPT, and APRDRG’S.


    1. Epic familiarity preferred.


    1. Computer literacy required with ability to key entry into 3M quickly.


    1. Experience with 3M encoder system preferred


    1. Ability to handle multiple tasks, priorities and deadlines.


    1. Analytical and organizational skills a must for analyzing charts and data.


    1. Effective communication and interpersonal skills required with ability to work with physicians

    and other caregivers regarding coding issues.
