The Psychiatric Emergency Evaluation Center (PEEC) provides consultative mental health services to the NCH Emergency Department. The primary role of a PEEC clinician includes prompt diagnostic assessment including risk assessment, safety planning, verbal de-escalation, disposition recommendation, facilitation of appropriate level of care and consultation/collaboration with ER physicians, nurses and psychiatry to maintain referrals and admissions. Coordinate referrals from community behavioral health agencies, emergency departments, Primary Care Physicians, etc. PEEC clinicians are also responsible for coordinating all NCH psychiatric admissions to the NCH In-Patient Unit and The YCSU. The Crisis Services Clinician I will possess the skills to provide interventions in a flexible and adaptive manner, with strong critical thinking skills. This individual will provide culturally appropriate and trauma-informed interactions and interventions. The Crisis Services Clinician I practices under supervision and is working toward the goal of independent licensure.

1. Remains current in required licensure and clinical or other trainings as required. Satisfactory progress toward independent licensure is expected.
2. Accurately evaluates and documents client presenting problems, history, symptomology, mental status, diagnosis and prescribes initial interventions in a timely manner.
3. Competently assesses risk for lethality and engages in thorough safety planning.
4. Recommends disposition for level of care, utilizing case consultation and staffing as appropriate.
5. Completes a review of the patient’s chart (when available) to inform decision-making.
6. Completes care coordination activities including mandatory reporting to CPS, insurance authorizations, identification and linkage to community resources.
7. Effectively presents clinical findings to the PEEC Psychiatrist and the ED Attending Physician.
8. Effectively communicates with members of the NCH Medical Team including physicians, nurses, PCA’s and constant attendants regarding the status of patient.
9. Employs strategies of intervention that are consistent with empirically supported treatments and consistent with program expectations. Interventions to include crisis intervention and de-escalation.
10. Remains current in research and knowledge of competencies of the treatment of behavioral health crisis and assessment of lethality risk.
11. Completes clinical charting and other related administrative paperwork in accordance with policy standards.
12. Practices within professional areas of expertise and under the supervision of an independently licensed practitioner.
13. Maintains productivity expectations and promotes patient access to care.
14. Effectively coordinates client care with other service providers and community resources to assure continuity of care. Places appropriate referrals and maintains knowledge of resources both internal and external to this agency.
15. Meets regularly with Clinical Lead Supervisor, Clinical Coordinator/Program Manager, or supervisory designee.
16. Attends routine staff meetings.
17. Attends in-service trainings, peer review and other intra-agency and supervisory activities. Obtains continuing education consistent with licensing requirements.
18. Demonstrates willingness to seek/accept direct supervision as well as respect productive feedback from colleagues and others.
19. Functions well in a team environment and contributes positive support to colleagues and peers.
20. Strives to maintain positive patient experience and engages in family centered care.
21. Supports the philosophy, goals and mission of Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
22. Performs other duties as assigned by Clinical Coordinator or Administrator.
1. Masters or doctoral degree from an accredited university or professional school of Counseling, Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy;
2. Appropriate Ohio licensure;
3. Demonstrated skills and abilities in providing and managing behavioral healthcare to children, adolescent and families;
4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, families, peers and community representatives.
