Nationwide Children's Hospital Behavioral Health Pavilion will open in March, 2020. We are currently accepting applications for future Education Nurse Specialist positions for the following nursing units:
Child Inpatient Unit
Adolescent Inpatient Unit
Youth Crisis Stabilization Unit
Psychiatric Crisis Center
Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
The EDUCATION NURSE SPECIALIST is responsible for assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating educational programming and services required for all levels of nursing and other patient care services staff to meet role expectations and changing learning needs; this involves creating learning systems and processes. A focus on collaborative relationships, quality management, and outcomes is inherent throughout the education mission and all education activities. Programming must meet the demand of educating personnel 24 hours a day. The primary populations served by the Education Nurse Specialist are the nursing and other staff providing patient care, managers, students, community professionals, and the public at large.
1. Assesses and analyzes the education needs of all levels of nursing and other patient care staff in collaboration with patient care leadership and makes recommendations regarding priority programming.
2. Interprets and provides standards for educational programming which foster quality, state of the art educational methods, process and outcomes.
3. Designs instructional systems and acts as a consultant to nursing and other patient care services in order to meet competency needs, age-appropriate patient/family care needs, and other learning needs related to functioning within their job descriptions of all levels of nursing staff, patient care services personnel, and other groups as requested.
4. Instructs others to perform duties within the framework of the standards, policies and procedures set forth by Children's Hospital and the Ohio Nurse Practice Act, JCAHO, and other professional practice standards.
5. Coordinates and manages educational programs and courses, assuring adherence to quality measures; enables others to gain these skills.
6. Teaches and presents educational classes, both formal and informal, in an effective manner and facilitates others to teach competently.
7. Develops and utilizes appropriate evaluation systems to determine the effectiveness of educational activities and analyzes for use in decision making.
8. Provides information linkage to nursing, other patient care services staff and affiliating faculty related to resources, educational techniques, and application of theory into practice.
9. Promotes patient-focused outcomes and flexibility in a changing work place through collaboration with all disciplines, group problem solving, cross training, information sharing, and educational consultancy to meet common educational needs.
10. Acts as a role model, coach, preceptor, mentor, resource and counselor related to the educational process/ patient care services competency needs.
11. Participates effectively in the business management of Patient Care Services Education by planning and modifying budgets, providing cost/benefit analyses, developing program justifications, and developing new ventures, in all activities remaining sensitive to impact of liability.
12. Participates actively on committees, task forces and projects.
13. Provides leadership in departmental and divisional interview process, peer review and quality performance improvement activities.
14. Utilizes research findings in educational endeavors and participates in research as appropriate.
15. Facilitates problem solving and conflict resolution related to educational issues and team building within Patient Care Services and with other groups as requested.
16. Participates in accomplishing Children's Hospital's educational mission.
17. Completes other duties, as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. Master of Science in Nursing or Education required.
2. Clinical competency in nursing practice. Pediatric nursing experience preferred.
3. Teaching skill in the classroom and/or clinical area. Ability to adapt teaching methods for various types of learners. Group facilitation skills.
4. Experience in educational program development.
5. Registered Nurse with current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Ohio.
6. Effective communication skills for relating to all levels of personnel and disciplines.
7. Leadership ability as demonstrated by high level of initiative, decision-making and organizational skills.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to see, hear, speak, read and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation, and care for oneself with little or no difficulty.
