Responsible for performing basic supportive, trauma informed care to emergency services patients/families under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Collects, documents, and reports data to the RN ?Does not interpret data. Demonstrates competence in providing age-appropriate care and service for pediatric patients from birth to 20 years 365 days, and selected adults.

1. Collects, documents, and reports the following data:
a. Vital signs including Temperature (oral, axillary, rectal); pulse (apical and radial); respirations; blood pressure or mean arterial pressure using the non-invasive automatic
b. Heights, weights, head circumference and abdominal girth.
c. Oxygen saturation.
2. Provides basic supportive care:
a. Oral feedingsb. Measuring input and output
c. Mobility: assists with transfer to wheelchair, ED cart, ambulating
d. Repositioning patientse. Helping patients into gowns
3. Follows all unit specific infection control policies and procedures a. places isolation magnet outside of patient rooms, wears proper PPE per policy
4. Performs constant attendant responsibilities for patients:
a. Cares for patients with restraints and documents observations per policy.
b. Promotes general patient safetyc. Completes room safety checklistd. Obtains/assist with constant packete. Documents safety checks in EPIC every 15 minutes in BH suite, every 30-60 when constant one on one.
c. crisis intervention, provides encouragement support and reinforces positive behavior with a therapeutic, calm approach while maintaining therapeutic boundaries, setting limits, and utilizing de-escalation techniques including physical intervention skills
5. Assist with post mortem care.6. Performs the following procedures:
a. Specimen collection: (urine for urinalysis and culture, stool for stool studies, sputum for culture, gastric drainage, blood by capillary puncture).
b. Specimen testing per unit policy.
c. Holds, positions patient and assists with procedures (examples: IV insertion, lumbar puncture, chest tube insertion and removal).
d. Gathers/opens/sets up supplies (including sterile trays) to assist RN and others.
e. Gathers tubing for both peripheral IVs and central venous catheters (does not include assembly, spiking bag or priming tubing).
f. Attaches patients to the pulse oximeter according to policy
g. Completes EKGh. performs ear irrigationi. performs visual acuity
j. assist with eye irrigation
8. Transports patients outside of the ED or Urgent Cares
9. Completes daily QC?s on POCT glucometer
10. Responds to Trauma Activations:
a. Provides chest compressions
b. Delegated duties within their scope
11. Completes or reinforces unit/room orientation to patient and/or family
12. Accepts delegation from RN. Demonstrates time and resource management.
13. Follows hospital policies and procedures
14. Follows HIPAA guidelines
15. Participates in unit/program/area quality improvement activities
16. Perform general unit tasks (answers phone, call lights, admission/discharge functions)Environmental
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required1. High school graduate or equivalent GED2. State tested nursing assistant strongly preferred OR one year of comparable experience in a hospital setting within the past 3 years -OR basic EMT active card holder -OR Medical Assistant certification -OR Nursing students can qualify if they have successfully completed the fundamentals of nursing course(s) of their college/school program.3. Good written and verbal communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills4. Basic computer skills, i.e. navigation, use of mouse, keyboard5. Must be able to perform basic math calculations (add, subtract, multiply and divide)6. Neat appearance, good grooming and professional manner7. Must perform manual tasks with or without accommodations, and care for oneself with little or no difficulty8. Applies the principles of body mechanics in lifting or moving patients and/or equipment9. Must be able to independently lift up to 25 pounds10. Must be able to move or reposition patients of any weight or size with the assistance of another person(s) and/or equipment11. Completion of orientation classes offered by Nationwide Children?s Hospital, the Department of Professional Development and individual unit based orientation12. Must demonstrate competence as defined in the Patient Care Assistant responsibilities/skills checklist in providing age appropriate care and services to pediatric patients of all ages and selected adult patients13.
