The Sports Medicine Sports Performance Specialist develops, implements, conducts, and monitors sports performance services on behalf of Nationwide Children's Hospital Sports Medicine; assists in management of sports performance facilities; participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of department goals related to sports performance services; and ensures compliance with Joint Commission and external regulatory bodies. The Sports Performance Specialist provides education to the medical team, patients and parents/caregivers, and the community as requested. The position may also participate in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives and hospital or departmental committees.The Sports Performance Specialist demonstrates competence (age/developmental/medical/cultural) in skills defined in duties and responsibilities.

Sports Medicine Department:
1. Maintains proper documentation in accordance with hospital standards and assists with the development and maintenance of reports for the sports medicine program.
2. Communicates with physicians, athletic trainers, and other members of the health care team on all patients as needed. Reviews the utilization of services and patient progress with sports medicine physician.
3. Provides patient/client, parent, and coach education to ensure proper follow-up. Documents instructions and evaluates the patient's/client's ability to perform the program. Recommends appropriate referrals to community resources.
4. Keeps abreast of all departmental policy and procedural changes and ensures implementation as appropriate within sports performance services. Hospital General:
5. Maintains at all times the rights of the patient/family regarding confidentiality of the medical record, according to hospital policy.6. Orients new staff, residents, fellows, students, and others to the sports medicine sports performance programs as needed.
7. Assists, as appropriate, in complying with applicable: federal, state and local laws; Medicare/Medicaid conditions of participation; JCAHO standards; and any other appropriate accrediting or regulatory body.
8. Promotes, models, and participates in NCH customer service initiatives; fosters patient, parent, caregiver, provider and other community relationships through using effective communication and collaboration skills; and openly and willingly provides NCH staff and managers with customer feedback, in an appropriate and goal-oriented way.
9. Participates in NCH continuous quality and performance improvement activities under the direction of the QI Coordinator and respective manager(s) (including event tracking and reporting, patient case conferences, performance improvement teams, customer satisfaction surveys, utilization review activities, etc.)10. Supports the philosophy, mission, policies, procedures, standards, and strategic goals of NCH; participates, as directed, in short and long-range planning and NCH strategic goal development, implementation and evaluation.Sports Performance Specific:
11. Develops and maintains relationships with community coaches, parents, athletic trainers and local primary care physicians to establish referral patterns to the program.12. Provides sports performance education to local schools, community youth leagues, and at community events as needed.
13. Participates in the development and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan to grow the NCH sports performance service line.
14. Participates in departmental strategic planning related to sports performance services as needed.
15. Assists in writing and producing program marketing materials used to increase community/professional awareness of services available through the sports medicine department.
16. Participates in general and department staff meetings, committee work and other related activities as assigned.
17. Demonstrates professionalism in job (appearance/dress, punctual to department meetings/functions, team player, represents and models philosophies of department and hospital).
18. Uses administrative time effectively and efficiently and takes ownership of self-improvement.
19. Designs, implements, and monitors age-appropriate injury prevention and performance enhancement programs for sports medicine clientele, schools, interscholastic teams, and community youth organizations.
20. Communicates with children on a level that they'll understand (in instruction, cueing, and error correction)
21. Develops, updates, and implements standards of service applicable to the assigned patient/client population. Ensures high-quality standards consistent with current evidence-based practice (EBP) sports performance research.
22. Provides client education regarding sports performance. Using expertise, assesses/designs/updates client education materials.
23. Coordinates transition of student-athlete rehabilitation to performance training with sports medicine staff.
24. Assists with coordinating, maintaining, and staffing of weight room/performance facilities; assists in identifying and purchasing needed sports performance equipment; assists in scheduling weight room training for the various athletic programs.
25. Assists with administration of intern program, which includes planning, supervising, and evaluating students. 26. Performs other duties as assigned.
1. Bachelor's degree required, masters preferred
2. Minimum of 2 - 5 years of related experience preferred (working with athletic populations and children)
3. National Strength and Conditional Association and/or American College of Sports Medicine certification required
4. Other certifications preferred, such as Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, Functional Movement Systems, USA Weightlifting, USA Track & Field, Titleist Performance Institute
5. CPR Certification required
6. Knowledge of medical terminology
