    Education: masters degree with high school experience preferred but not required.  

    Schedule: this position will include 2 half day clinic coverage responsibilities per week along with the high school athletic trainer assignment. This is a 12 month position with work Mon-Sat. including some evenings

    Summary 

    The Outreach athletic trainer is responsible for assisting in all aspects of the Sports Medicine program through daily operations, community outreach, injury prevention programming, research, and coordination of care. They will develop professional relationships with their patients and families to become a valued member of their health care team, and continually look for ways to improve the quality of their clinical and rehabilitative services. They will establish relationships with local sports programs (both school and community based), assist with marketing events, coordinate clinical care for sports medicine patients throughout the NCH system, assist with administrative reports, evaluate patients for rehabilitation, administer therapeutic treatment, document evaluations, results and progress, and educate patients and parents on treatment goals. All care shall be provided in a manner that promotes quality, continuity, and safe patient care. They will also demonstrate competency defined in the ?Principal Duties and Responsibilities? section by providing age appropriate care to patients from the age of 5 through 21 years and select adult patients, with a primary focus on the middle and high school ages.

    Responsibilities

    Sports Medicine Clinical:

    1. Assists physicians in Sports Medicine clinic in the delivery of high quality patient care. Duties may include rooming patients and taking a history, placing LPIP X-ray orders, constructing home exercise programs, fitting braces and casts, performing a functional assessment or gait training of a patient, scheduling appointment, assisting in procedures, or other duties as requested by the physicians.

    2. Maintains proper documentation in accordance with hospital standards and assists with the development and maintenance of reports for the sports medicine program.

    3. Communicates with physicians and other members of the health care team on all patients as needed. Reviews the utilization of services and patient progress with sports medicine physician.

    4. Provides patient and parent education to ensure proper follow-up. Documents instructions and evaluates the patient?s ability to perform the program. Recommends appropriate referrals to community resources.

    5. Assists with the coordination of clinical care for sports medicine patients throughout the NCH system and with consulting physicians.

    6. Keeps abreast of all policy and procedural changes for clinical care and takes responsibility to become competent with any techniques that are to be used in clinic.

     

    Hospital General:

    7. Maintains at all times the rights of the patient/family regarding confidentiality of the medical record, according to hospital policy.

    8. Orients new staff, residents, fellows, students, and others to the sports medicine program as needed.

    9. Assists, as appropriate, in complying with applicable: federal, state and local laws; Medicare/Medicaid conditions of participation; JCAHO standards; and any other appropriate accrediting or regulatory body.

    10. Promotes, models and participates in NCH customer service initiatives; fosters patient, parent, caregiver, payor, provider and other community relationships through using effective communication and collaboration skills; and openly and willingly provides NCH staff and managers with customer feedback, in an appropriate and goal-oriented way.

    11. Participates in NCH continuous quality and performance improvement activities under the direction of the QI Coordinator and respective manager(s) (including event tracking and reporting, patient case conferences, performance improvement teams, customer satisfaction surveys, utilization review activities, etc.)

    12. Supports the philosophy, mission, policies, procedures, standards, and strategic goals of NCH; participates, as directed, in short and long-range planning and NCH strategic goal development, implementation and evaluation.

     

    Department Specific:

    13. Develops and maintains relationships with community coaches, athletic trainers and local primary care physicians to establish referral patterns to the program.

    14. Provides athletic training services to local schools, community youth leagues, and at community events as needed.

    15. Assists with the implementation of the injury prevention programs, educational programming and research projects as needed and assists with the ordering of equipment & supplies.

    16. Assists Sports Medicine Program Manager with the development of written and produced program material used to increase community/professional awareness of service available through sports medicine program.

    17. Participates in general and department staff meetings, committee work and other related activities as assigned.

    18. Performs other duties as assigned.

     

    Job Specific:

    19. Volunteers to assist with educational programming and special event coverage for the Sports Medicine department.

    20. Demonstrates professionalism in job (appearance/dress, punctual to clinic and other department meetings/functions, team player, represents and models philosophies of department and hospital).

    21. Uses administrative time effectively and efficiently and takes ownership of self-improvement.

    22. Initiate individualized injury rehab programs, and works with teams to enhance injury prevention.

    23. Connect with school administration to enable them to leverage all NCH resources (concussions in the classroom, nutrition, injury prevention, referrals, NCH pricing on needed supplies).

    Qualifications

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

    1. Communication and leadership skills to plan, organize, and coordinate sports medicine activities and patient care programs.

    2. Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, parents, external contacts, and all levels of hospital staff and to maintain confidentiality of information.

    3. Minimum of 3 years of work experience in a sports medicine setting.

    4. Bachelor's degree in athletic training or related field.

    5. BOC certification and current Ohio AT license required.

    6. CPR/BSL certification.

    7. CSCS or PES certification preferred.
